Polperro, a picturesque fishing village in south Cornwall, England, boasts a population of around 1,554. Nestled along the Polperro Heritage Coastline, its tightly packed fishermen’s houses and quaint harbour draw tourists, especially in summer. Fishing, particularly pilchards, has been the village’s backbone for centuries, with fish drawn to the South Cornwall coast in late summer. Historically, smuggling thrived here from the 12th century, peaking in the late 18th century when high taxes on goods like spirits and tobacco fuelled covert trade from Guernsey.
