Kathy Charles & Rachel Challen, Nottingham Trent University share how NTU has developed a university-wide strategy for assessing work‑like experience at scale, ensuring all students benefit from meaningful, employability‑focused learning throughout their degree. The talk explores the drivers behind the initiative, including graduate outcomes, student progression, changing student–work relationships, and NTU’s civic mission. Kathy outlines the institutional approach to embedding assessed work‑like experience across the curriculum, moving beyond traditional placements to include employer challenges, community‑engaged learning, simulations, and projects. Rachel then demonstrates how this strategy has been translated into practice within the School of Arts and Humanities through the Transformations modules for joint honours students. She discusses how themes of agency, belonging, interdisciplinary learning, and social change are embedded across Levels 4–6, supported by team‑based learning and authentic assessment. Throughout the session, PebblePad is highlighted as the “golden thread” that brings together work‑like experiences, reflections, evidence, and future planning into a single longitudinal portfolio that students can carry forward beyond graduation. This talk took place at the studio, Birmingham in June 2023.
