Americana: Three Vignettes (Live)

Premiered by Anthony McGill, Randall Goosby, and Joshua Mhoon at the Kimmel Center in December of 2025, Americana was composed between the summer and fall of 2025. As America is about to embark on its 250th year of life—a fact I only connected after completing this piece—Americana has manifested for me as a magnification of the external America, and a mirror to the internal one. Each movement that makes up the full piece, draws its name from different materials that have been instrumental in establishing this country at different points throughout its history— Steel in the late 1800s and early 1900s, & Cotton in the early to mid 1800s. The last movement, Smoke, is derived from two places—the spiritual use of Sacred Tobacco by American Indigenous Nations, and the smoke that arises from something when burned, or perhaps most pointedly, when destroyed to make room for something new.
