FIRST CENTURY FOUNDATIONS SEASON 11: "GETTING TO KNOW JESUS IN HIS HOMELAND" EPISODE 1: HIS HOMELAND TV Host, Jeff Futers (Executive Director of First Century Foundations) ventures out on a quest to get to know Jesus better by exploring Israel and learning about 1st Century Judea - the land that was once home to Jesus. In order to get an introductory overview of Galilee's landscape, and to learn the political and religious climate of Jesus' time, Archaeologist and Israel Tour Guide, Danny "The Digger" Herman takes Jeff to Mt. Precipice in Nazareth. Climbing a few hundred meters above sea level, Jeff follows his tour guide as they ascend Mt. Precipice - the very cliff where tradition tells us, Jesus was nearly killed by his own community! From this overlook, Jeff and Danny get an incredible view of the region Jesus called home 2000 years ago. Here, Jeff learns about the religious and political climate where Jesus grew up and focused his ministry. From this ancient “perch” Jeff gets a bird’s-eye-view of the homeland of Jesus, observing the intersection of the 2 major 1st Century highways, learning how they impacted the region. From Mount Precipice in Nazareth, Jeff and Danny drive South-West to visit to the economic and political Capital of Herod’s kingdom: Caesarea Maritima - a beautiful, ancient city resting on the Mediterranean coast. At Caesarea, Jeff explores Herod's opulent Palace that was masterfully built on the water, and examines up-close, archaeological proof of Pontius Pilate who ruthlessly governed Judea during Jesus’ lifetime - the Pilate Inscription! Throughout this episode, interviews with scholars and theologians reveal the historical and political background of Jesus’ life. Who controlled Judea? When and why was this land called Palestine? What did the political atmosphere feel like in Jesus' homeland? What types of classes existed? From what class did Jesus emerge? Is there any significance to the fact that Jesus was born here and called it home for the duration of his life on earth?
