This is a very crucial time of the year for all track and field athletes as the outdoor season is fast approaching or even upon us. I know that many of you in the US will have been competing for quite some time now. The training you do now will have a huge effect on how well you do later on in the season. This is hte time when technique needs to be cleaned up and speed and power really readied so that it can be turned up to max in a month or two time. This is the case in the UK at least when the major selection meetings take place, for example. VIDEO TIMELINE 0.00 Introduction 0.24sec How I structure training and my unit based approach There will be 4-5 units in each session and each gets progressively intense as the session progresses Unit 1 Basics - pre-training; hip drills, arm action drills ... these provide both a warm-up and link into the theme of the session. 1.37min Unit 2 Cyclical and piston speed drills Unit 3: Long Jump & Triple Jump specific drills I was lucky to have another coach helping me as I had a particularly large group on this day. The triple jumpers worked specifically on foot contact and the out and back motion of the lower leg. This was done with the use of skipping and lower intensity bounding The long jumpers worked on various take-off drills. I go into detail about a specific bounding drill and the technical points of the contact. Arm action and variation is also considered 3.40min High intensity sprint work 1: 30 into 15m sprint build-up 2: Rotation runs aka "Bursts" - on off sprints where the athlete turns over for 5-6 steps and then repeat this over 50m. This is a very neurally draining drill This will fire up the neuro muscular system "We are trying to almost force the body to move faster" There will still be a technical focus 5.15min Technical unit Jumps were performed from 8-14 steps Again I focus on the triple jump briefly.
