A performance of "Haiqing"《海青》(Gyrfalcon), piece no. 4 from the collection "Qing Gu Gong Wang Fu Yinyue"《清故恭王府音乐》(Music of the Former Qing [Dynasty], from the Prince Gong Mansion), as transmitted by Aisin Gioro Yuhuan and notated/arranged for solo sanxian (三弦, Chinese 3-stringed long-necked fretless plucked lute with snakeskin-covered resonator) by Tan Longjian. The piece takes the form of a suite comprising 18 continuously performed sections. The performer is Ms. Mu Deying (穆德莹, b. Dezhou, Shandong, China, 1994), who is a graduate of the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China, where she studied with Professors Tan Longjian and Li Yi (李乙, 1932-2019) from 2016 until her graduation with a master's degree in the spring of 2019. The performance, which was part of a concert entitled "Mu Deying Sanxian Master's Graduation Concert" (穆德莹三弦硕士毕业音乐会), took place in a recital hall at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China, April 27, 2019. The six pieces in the "Qing Gu Gong Wang Fu Yinyue" collection come from the repertoire of Aisin Gioro Yuhuan (爱新觉罗·毓峘; pinyin: Aixinjueluo Yuhuan, 1929-2003), a member of the Manchu royal family of the former Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) who learned to play xiansuo (弦索, string ensemble) music on the sanxian (三弦, a 3-stringed long-necked fretless lute with snakeskin-covered soundbox) from former musicians of the Qing court while growing up in the Prince Gong Mansion (Chinese: Gong Wang Fu, 恭王府) in Beijing during the Republic period. "Haiqing" is also piece no. 10 from "Xiansuo Beikao"《弦索备考》(String Music Reference), also called "Xiansuo Shisan Tao"《弦索十三套》(13 Suites for Strings), an important collection of Chinese instrumental music published in Beijing in 1814, during the Qing Dynasty. This piece was published in "Qing Gu Gong Wang Fu Yinyue: Aisin Gioro Yuhuan Sanxian Chuanpu"《清故恭王府音乐: 爱新觉罗·毓峘三弦传谱》, a book published by Tan Longjian (谈龙建, b. 1952), China's leading sanxian player and a professor at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. During the 1980s, Tan had the opportunity to learn this repertoire directly from Aisin Gioro Yuhuan, who was apparently the only person to have maintained pieces from the "Xiansuo Beikao" collection in living tradition until the late 20th century. In 12th-century China, swan-hunting with gyrfalcons (Chinese: haidongqing, 海东青) obtained from Jurchen tribes became fashionable among the Khitan nobility. When demand for gyrfalcons exceeded supply, the Liao emperor imposed a tax payment-in-kind of gyrfalcons on the Jurchen; under the last Liao emperor, tax collectors were entitled to use force to procure sufficient gyrfalcons. This was one cause of the Jurchen rebellion, whose leader Wanyan Agud (Emperor Taizu of Jin, 1068-1123) annihilated the Liao empire in 1125, and established the Jin Dynasty (1115-1234) in its stead. (谈龙建 撰) More information: https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/IBPaIn9Dre... https://www.douban.com/group/topic/13...
