0:00 I. Adagio 3:20 II. Minuet. Allegro 4:20 III. Gavotta. Allegro 5:40 IV. Largo 6:50 V. Ciaccona. Allegro Benedetto Marcello was a Venetian composer and also statesman, serving in the Venetian Council for nearly twenty years before becoming governor of Pola. He wrote at least a dozen recorder sonatas published as op. 2 in 1712 and there are four sonatas for soprano recorder that are of questionable authenticity. Rather than the more usual sonata form, this has more elements of a dance suite; the two slow movements are not dances but the three quicker ones are: minuet, gavotte, and chaconne. The chaconne is the most fun and also the hardest, with a lot of different variations that go all over the instrument, and I have heard it used as a recital piece by itself. Some people take it very fast but I like a more moderate tempo so that I can play it clearly which I frankly find more impressive than rushing through it and smearing the notes.
