He was from a very poor background, selling newspapers in the streets of Buenos Aires when he was only 9 years old. He worked up his way in music: He played the violin, composed his first tango, ‘Pinta brava’ in 1912, and he directed his first orchestra already in 1915. By the 1920’s, and the first half of the 1930’s, Canaro had the most successful tango orchestra, touring not only Argentina, but Europe as well. Francisco Canaro recorded some 3800 tracks and he has almost 300 compositions in his name. His career as a composer and orchestra leader made him a small fortune. One name that has to be mentioned from the members of his orchestra: Minotto De Cicco, playing the first bandoneon, and the musical center of the orchestra. Francisco Canaro worked with famous singers of the Tango Canción like Carlos Gardel and Charlo. And also Ada Falcón (with whom he had an affair for 10 years). His most important singers - from the 1930s - for dancing in the milongas were Ernesto Famá and Roberto Maida, with Maida being my favourite. He brought a certain refinement to the recordings of Canaro that is lacking from the recordings with Famá. Roberto Maida was born in the Calabria region in Italy in 1908. His family moved to Buenos Aires the next year. Maida had his debut as singer with the orchestra of Michel Caló in 1925 and from 1928 to 1933 he toured in Europe with various tango orchestras. Back in Buenos Aires he joined Francisco Canaro in 1934 – they had already recorded 1 tango and 1 waltz together in 1930; and their biggest succes together started in 1935. Maida would stay with Canaro until the end of 1938. He then left, following the return of Ernesto Famá to the orchestra. The tanda starts with ‘Invierno’, a beautiful but sad wintersong written by Horacio Pettorossi, with lyrics by Enrique Cadícamo. Invierno has become one of Canaro’s most popular tangos, at some point so popular (and overplayed perhaps), there was a saying “Invierno is the new Poema”. The intro of Invierno features an instrument we don’t get to hear every day in tango: the trumpet, played by José Ranieri Virdo. The second track is ‘Recuerdos de París’. Ahh, Paris, don’t we all love Paris? Francisco Canaro sure did, he had his second home base in Paris. A tango written by Mario Canaro with lyrics by Carmelo Santiago. Roberto Maida sings about finding love in Paris: and “through your love I began to live…” Third is a somewhat lesser known tango, and one of my favourite Canaro-Maida tracks: ‘Frío’. Music written by Joaquín Mora, and lyrics by José María Contursi. A sad song really, about the ‘deadly cold of loneliness…’ And again we can hear the sound of the trumpet, towards the final notes. The final track is ‘Desprecio’, Music by Bartolomé Chapela, and lyrics by Atilio Supparo. The lyrics aren’t getting any happier really, but this tango does sound a bit more upbeat. Well, Canaro is one of the rhythmical orchestras after all. But there are melodical things to enjoy as well, especially how Maida’s voice and the violins respond to eachother in the chorus.
