I hope in this video I managed to capture what it was like to experience Tibet: its culture, its people, and its nature. It’s forbidden for foreigners to travel solo here, so unfortunately I needed to join a tour. But on the plus side that meant I could have experiences that would have otherwise been impossible, such as visiting a local tea house or having lunch in a local Tibetan home. The music I used is Tibetan inspired, so if it sounds a little repetitive and hypnotic, that’s the point. The words in the second track are ཨོཾ་བཛྲ་སཏྭ་ཧཱུྃ། (“Om Benza Satto Hung”), which is a purification chant. It’s a long video, so here are the timings in case you want to skip to a specific part: 00:00 Xining (Qinghai Province) 01:30 The 20-hour train from Xining to Lhasa 02:59 Lhasa: Buddhist monasteries 04:34 Lhasa: Potala Palace and old city centre 05:39 Heading West of Lhasa: Tibetan scenery 07:07 Reaching Mount Everest (Qomolangma) 07:47 Traveling from Mount Everest to Shigatse 08:08 Shigatse Some Tibet facts: 🔵 Tibet is huge, it’s almost the same size as Western Europe. If it was a country (cough!), it would be the world’s 10th largest. So I only really scratched the surface on this trip. ⚪️ It holds the world's third-largest store of water-ice, feeding ten major Asian rivers. It also has one of the world’s lowest rates of population density, at just 3 inhabitants per square kilometre. 🔴 There are more than 50 Tibetic languages, comprising 200 dialects. Standard (Lhasan) Tibetan is the official language of the Tibet Autonomous Region. 🟢 Not only does it have the highest mountain in the world, it also has the highest average altitude (4,575m), the highest road, the highest train, the highest town, the highest monastery, and the highest toilet. 🟡 Tibetan prayer flags come in this specific set of five colous - blue, white, red, green, and yellow - arranged from left to right. When the wind blows, it is believed to carry the mantras printed on the flags to spread blessings, good will, and compassion. Things that the world could use a little more of these days, wouldn’t you say? 🔵⚪️🔴🟢🟡
