Here's a lovely little village on the outskirts of Brough, and one that requires you to fall into the Beck that runs though it to be classed as a true member of the village community! That Beck is by far the most attractive part of this village, and it was also historically a lifeline for it as well, as it supplied fresh running water for the residents here. A circular village, making this an easy walk around, the main thing to remember about this one is how much land this one covers. The village is so small, but the area around it stretches as far South as the River Humber, at least four miles away! The village is a delightful little place though and it didn't take me long to fall in love with it. I was a little concerned at the revelation this one has no speed limit (if you can believe that!), but was amazed equally that this one also had a watermill and a windmill in times gone by. The very extensive information board outside the village hall here gives us a nice depiction of the 1913 demolition of the windmill too. The village is the modern day home of Wandahome, manufacturers of touring caravans, as well as big services on the former A63. There's a garden centre, an old school, a massive two part village green, and lots of old buildings including Sebastopol Cottage, built using ballast shipped here during the Crimean War in 1857. There are stories here, some nice, and some very much not so. In 2005, for example, this village hit the national news for the wrong reasons. That said, though, it still remains a quiet, lovely little chunk of East Yorkshire. This is the lovely little village of ELLERKER. **** My name is Andy.
