🎵 Song Spotlight: “Rozhinkes mit Mandlen” 🎶 “Rozhinkes mit Mandlen” (Raisins and Almonds) is a beloved Yiddish lullaby that was originally part of Shulamis, a Yiddish operetta written in 1880 by Abraham Goldfaden (1840-1908), often called the father of modern Yiddish theater. The refrain of the song is adapted from the Yiddish folk tune Unter Yankeles Vigele (Under Yankele’s Cradle). The imagery in Rozhinkes mit Mandlen is not only about a mother singing sweet hopes for her child’s future, but it also reflects the deeper aspirations of Jewish families living in the diaspora. Raisins and almonds are significant agriculturally, as ancient products of the land of Israel, and symbolically, through their inclusion in Jewish rituals, texts, and culture. They represent both sustenance and a sweet life, linking Jewish tradition with the hopes for prosperity and well-being across generations.
