"Salomila" is a classic slack key piece, one of the first songs that many of us learn when we discover the style. The history of the song is obscure, I've read that it originated in Tahiti, others have said it is Caribbean. Led talks about it as an old party song, one that would feature lyrics injected by anyone and everyone, the more rascally the better. I've recorded "Salomila" more than any other piece, because I use it as my default number when I'm demonstrating various recording equipment and techniques at my Homebrewed Music blog http://www.homebrewedmusic.com/ and YouTube channel / homebrewedmusic . Led and I have even done a duet version at his home in Kane`ohe, in that instance playing in the key of C with Led using one of Uncle Fred Punahoa's tunings while I played in drop C • Salomila - Slack Key Backyard Style . The version in this video is done in taropatch open G, spelled D G D G B D from lowest pitch to highest. We took advantage of a day of beautiful weather to shoot some video on the deck here in Walnut Creek. Led is borrowing my Martin OM-18GE while I'm playing my beloved Wingert Model E. I recorded the audio using a pair of Shure KSM141 microphones connected to the Zoom H6. These mics are unusual because they are small diaphragm mics with mechanically switched patterns. They can be set to cardioid or omni configuration and in this case I used the cardioid (directional) setting. I shot the video using two Panasonic Lumix GH4 cameras and edited the video in Edius.
