It's been almost three years since construction began on the Trent Street Bridge, and store owners nearby say after the toll it's taken on their businesses, they're ready for it to wrap up for good. This bridge is now set to open at least six months earlier than expected, providing some relief to drivers and business owners. "We're really excited for that to open up again", said Julie Kimball-Bryant, general manager at Global Neighborhood Thrift. The thrift sits right at Trent and Hamilton. For the past three years, Global Thrift and other businesses have dealt with closures on Trent while the East Trent bridge has been under construction. "Global neighborhood thrift moved to this location on Trent and Hamilton about three years ago, about two months before the project started. So we’ve really never known what the true potential could be for this space," Kimball-Bryant said. The thrift store provides jobs for former refugees and was getting ready to expand services when construction began. "We took over the other half of the building, just opened our giant donation center which is really going to help us, receive more donations and our capacity to hire more former refugees, and then Trent shut down on the way, so it’s really challenging. Really hurt us over the summer and just regards to how many donations we could receive and process," she said. But relief is on the way, and earlier than anticipated. "To answer the question about when it'll open, we're probably looking at late spring to early summer at this point," said Ryan Overton with WSDOT. Overton said favorable weather and good water flow from the Spokane River are reasons he believes the project's contractor has been able to speed up the whole process. "Originally it wasn't supposed to be complete until the end of 2023, but the contractor has been able to make up some time, and it'll likely be open 6-7 months early," Overton said. Now, WSDOT crews are down to parts of the project that depend solely on the weather. "Until we start to see some warmer weather we really can't get out and do a lot of the complete work that needs to be done in order to open the bridge. But when that happens and we can get the other barriers in, we'll then open the lanes to traffic," Until then, drivers will continue to have to use posted detours to get around the area. When the project is done, the bridge will have two lanes, and an extra path for pedestrians. WSDOT says it'll most likely be done by early June. ►Subscribe: / 4newsnow ►Website: http://www.kxly.com ►Twitter: / kxly4news ►Facebook: / kxly4news
