The Japanese presence in the neighborhood begins when, in 1912, Japanese immigrants began to live on Rua Conde de Sarzedas, a steep slope, where, in the lower part, there was a stream and a floodplain area. One of the reasons they sought out this street is that almost all properties had basements, and rents for basement rooms were incredibly cheap. In these rooms, only groups of people lived. For those immigrants, that little corner of the city of São Paulo meant hope for better days. As it is a central neighborhood, from there they could easily move to the workplace. Already at that time, commercial activities began to emerge: an inn, a store, a house that manufactured tofu (soy cheese), another that manufactured manju (Japanese sweet) and also job agency firms, thus forming the "street of the Japanese". A tall red torii arch marks the entrance to Liberdade, the Japanese region of the city, where the streets are decorated with lanterns. Dining options include sushi bars, ramen shops and yakisoba noodle stands, as well as Chinese and Korean restaurants. Gift shops and supermarkets sell kimonos, pots and imported Asian delicacies, while the Freedom Fair on Sundays has accessories and handicrafts. #culturajaponesa #migração #liberdade
