When asymmetry is present, we must consider movement in multiple planes. Commonly, we'll see a combination of right side-bend and left rotation. When these positions co-exist with right rib internal rotation, it's difficult to access rib external rotation. The left rotation and right side bend create posterior compression. They approximate the posterior intercostal spaces, which takes up the available room for thoracic extension. While classic thoracic mobility drills absolutely can and do work, in this case they're much less effective. To improve results, we must account for movement in the frontal and transverse planes. In this specific examples, right rib rotation and left side-bend allow us to open space for thoracic extension. Once that space is available, we can use thoracic extension to increase access to rib external rotation and elevation. By integrating breathing (inhalation) with these cues, we can expand the right upper chest wall and improve movement of the rib cage, neck, and shoulders. It's important to note that not everyone has the same pattern. And the only way to find out what adjustments make sense for you is to develop awareness of your body's tendencies. One of the biggest mistakes I see (and have done) is assuming you're in a pattern rather than feeling it for yourself. The best way to ensure you don't make this mistake is to use a framework free of existing biases.
