ಕೊಡಿಯಾಲ ಕೈಮಗ್ಗದ ಸೀರೆಗಳು Kodiyala Handloom Sarees Mandya near Mysore Karnataka Vocal for local Make in India by Shreni Samudaya We bring to you a special collection of sarees woven in cotton and silk by weavers of Kodiyala, a well known cluster near Mysore in Karnataka. The sarees have been developed with intervetion by Shrenis Samudaya, a non-govt organisation based at Bangalore. Kodiyala is famed to be the home of the Padmashali weaving communities when over 160 weaving families are said to have migrated there from erstwhile Andhra Pradesh over three centuries ago on the invitation of the Wodeyar kings. Despite largely engaging with power loom, most weavers have the knowledge and skill set that is prerequisite for handloom weaving, and this collection is largely a revival of handloom skills that weavers used to practise weaving. The sarees of this region have certain motifs and textile practices practised in the region, and across Karnataka. Motifs that have been used in these sarees are the Rudrakshi (beads), Navilu (peacock), Maavina kayi (mango) and others. So go ahead and indulge yourself in the beauty of Kodiyala sarees that will take you back to the days of Tipu Sultan and the royal city of Mysore. The word ‘Shreni’ comes from ancient Indian trade guilds that were formed for occupations. These guilds were inextricably intertwined with the economy - from the supply chain to the markets, these guilds were woven throughout the socio-economic fabric of India. Our philosophy comes from these very groups, prominent in the Buddhist Era, and our aim is to revive these Shrenis. Shreni Samudaya is working towards rekindling the same essence of autonomy, economic structure, and community sentiment that existed in ancient India. Shreni Samudaya's efforts are also directed towards providing market access to the communities that we work with. Shreni Samudaya source products directly from them, to eliminate exploitative middlemen. This channel ensures that our artisans and weavers get fair returns for their work. Every purchase you make with us contributes directly towards ensuring sustainable livelihoods for the Shreni member that you’re buying from.
