Translating the main theme song (片頭曲) "Love is Painful" (愛你愛到不知痛) from the Flying Fox of the Snow Mountains 1999 (雪山飛狐) into English. Original Cantonese Song by Jacky Cheung (張學友). This series was a very loose adaptation of Fox Volant of the Snowy Mountain (雪山飛狐) and The Young Flying Fox (飛狐外傳) novels by Jin Yong (金庸), who is also referred to as Louis Cha in English. As I have mentioned before, so popular is the story that it is actually one of the first Jin Yong novels ever to have an official English translation. It was done by Olivia Monk. I found the 1999 version of the story to be a big let down. This is because TVB made several changes to the story line, character origins, and added plot elements that were not in the original novel. Perhaps the biggest sin, is TVB merging several characters into one which I'll explain later. The series stars Sunny Chan (陳錦鴻) who had a thin resume of wuxia series until this role. He performed okay as Hu Fei (胡斐) without being brilliant. The problem with Sunny is he lacks that heroic aura to be a main lead. Marco Ngai (魏駿傑) was in the series and had a lot of screen time for some unknown reason. He portrayed three different characters in Fuk'anggan (福康安), Chen Jialuo (陳家洛), and Qianlong Emperor (乾隆帝). I didn't like how any of these characters were portrayed. Vincent Wan (尹揚明) was serviceable as Miao Renfeng (苗人鳳). Eddie Cheung (張兆輝) essentially had his character merged from Tian Guinong (田歸農) and Feng Tiannan (鳳天南). This was an odd choice which made the plot elements really incoherent. Dick Lau (廖啟智) played Ping Asi (平阿四) who came across as pretty bitter in this series. Felix Wong (黃日華) and Maggie Shiu (邵美琪) appeared at the beginning of the series as the parents. I really liked Felix's portrayal of Hu Yidao (胡一刀). Once his character dies, the series became a disaster with all the changes TVB made. Felix actually stared as Hu Fei in the movie version ‘New Tales of the Flying Fox’ (新飛狐外傳) released by Shaw Brothers in 1984. It’s worth checking out. It was one of Charmaine Sheh's (佘詩曼) first ever wuxia series and you could tell that she was pretty raw and inexperienced in acting at this point. She just looked pretty in a wuxia costume in this series but delivered her lines in one mechanical tone and void of any emotion. Poor Joyce Tang's (滕麗名) character was really butchered as it was the merger of three different characters in the novel - Yuan Ziyi (袁紫衣), the daughter of the escort bureau who falls for Fuk'anggan and also the daughter of Tian Guinong. I really liked Yuan Ziyi in the novel and so I hated the changes that TVB made. It made the series really painful to watch... Finally, Cho Chun (曹眾) plays Nan Lan (南蘭). The other character they butchered is Cheng Lingsu (程靈素) where they made her really annoying and a comic relief. It was pretty poor and I hated what TVB done here too. I was angry watching it. The theme song which I have titled "Love is Painful" is sang by Jacky Cheung. The lyrics describe the love and fate of Hu Fei's parents. The literal translation of the song title is more like "Loving you is painful to the point that it is no longer painful" so I decided to shorten it. The studio/CD version of this song released by Jack Cheung sounds really different. It's more of an acoustic version that lacks the emotion and passion of the theme song that was released with the TVB series. The studio/CD version also has much more lyrics. However, I like the song that was released with the TVB series so I decided to translate this version instead. So enjoy...
