On March 16, 1995, 32-year-old Kenneth “Kenny” Floyd was found stabbed to death inside his third-floor apartment at the Glenmoor Green Apartments in Aurora, Colorado. There were signs of a violent struggle, such as a bloody trail leading down three flights of stairs. And in Kenny’s bathroom sink, investigators found blood that did not belong to him. From the very beginning, detectives believed Kenny’s killer had injured themselves during the attack, leaving behind crucial DNA evidence. But despite a viable DNA profile, no one has ever been charged. Over the years, investigators explored multiple leads including, Leslie Taylor, a former romantic partner, Kevin Ransom, who had prior financial disputes with Kenny, Brandi, a former best friend of Kenny’s girlfriend whose behavior raised red flags, family members with past conflicts, and other individuals connected to Kenny’s social circle in mid-1990s Yakima, Washington and Aurora, Colorado. In 2022, renewed testing allowed forensic genealogists to trace the unknown DNA to ancestry connected to Montserrat, a small Caribbean island devastated by volcanic eruptions in the mid-1990s, the same year Kenny was killed. But the eruption destroyed many of the very records investigators now need to identify their suspect. This case may hinge on distant relatives who don’t even realize they’re connected. In this episode of The Deck, Ashley Flowers revisits Kenny’s case, talks to Detective Jason McDonald of the Aurora Police Department, explores the early investigative missteps, and shares how genetic genealogy could still bring answers nearly 30 years later.
