Cataracts and glaucoma are two of the most common eye conditions, and though they are very different, I sometimes see them getting mixed up. They are actually completely different conditions with different causes and very different effects on vision, treatments, and prognoses. Watch this video to learn the ins and outs about cataracts, glaucoma, and how they MIGHT indirectly relate to one another on occasion. While cataracts do not cause glaucoma, having blurry cataracts in the way of imaging and testing may make monitoring glaucoma more complicated and removing them may improve eye pressure. On the other hand, while glaucoma does not cause cataracts, certain medications that are used to treat glaucoma, especially a few specific types of glaucoma may increase the rate of cataract progression. There's one EXTREMELY IMPORTANT thing to remember here. Cataracts are treatable (with surgery), but vision loss due to glaucoma is irreversible.
