Crashed scout Thomas Kallig enters the Colossar Arena's Rite of Ascension to win parts for his ship by climbing the 9'4" undefeated warrior, Minalia, Sovereign of the Pit. Unlike other suitors who sought a trophy, Thomas, a skilled climber, views Minalia as an "engineering problem". He survives three qualifying bouts using unconventional tactics. During private training, the two bond and Thomas realizes Minalia's strength is being suppressed by her mandated supplements . They fall in love and turn the marriage ritual into a plan for rebellion. In the final Rite, Thomas climbs Minalia while she, now off the suppressants, uses her full power to smash a gravity pylon when the Vren attempt to control her. They escape in the chaos, sparking a massive gladiator revolution and finding freedom together.
