The Mikado, originally written as a send up of Victorian-era British bureaucracy, thinly disguised in a fictional Japanese setting, is one of the most complex and satirical of the Gilbert & Sullivan works. This production sees the story played out on a mantelpiece by figurines in mostly Japanese costume, as famously styled through the years by manufacturers of porcelain miniature collectables. Act 1 Like bureaucratic society, no one in The Mikado story is quite what they appear to be... The Mikado’s son, Nanki-Poo runs away to the town of Titipu to escape marriage to the elderly Katisha, whose only attribute is apparently a lovely left shoulder-blade. Nanki-Poo disguises himself as a trombone player in the Titipu town band. He sees Yum-Yum and falls in love with her. But Yum-Yum is engaged to be married, to her guardian Ko-Ko. Ko-Ko, formerly a low-cost labourer, had been under sentence of death for flirting. But for no apparent reason, he’s been reprieved – and appointed to the exalted rank of Lord High Executioner. Overcome when he learns that Yum-Yum is betrothed to another, Nanki-Poo decides to kill himself. Meanwhile, Ko-Ko receives a disturbing letter from the Mikado. The Mikado has noticed that no executions have taken place in Titipu for a long time – and warns that unless one quickly takes place, the city will be reduced to the rank of a village. Ko-Ko is wondering how to deal with the problem of arranging an execution when he spots Nanki-Poo all geared up to hang himself. Ko-Ko asks Nanki-Poo not to “commit suicide” but to be the “execution appointee” instead. Nanki-Poo agrees – on condition that he can be married to Yum-Yum for a month. At this point Katisha arrives, searching for Nanki-Poo. But on finding him, she is unsuccessful in her attempts to reveal to the Titipu town folk his true identity as the son of the Mikado. Exasperated, Katisha leaves – threatening to reveal Nanki-Poo’s whereabouts to the Mikado. Act 2 ACT 2 Begins with Yum-Yum preparing for her month-long marriage to Nanki-Poo. Ko-Ko arrives to spoil her happiness with the news that the wife of any man to be executed must die along with him. She is, it seems, to be buried alive. Nanki-Poo decides that the only thing to do to save the situation is to kill himself at once. Once again though, Ko-Ko steps in to stop him. Ko-Ko, with the connivance of Pooh-Bah (Lord High Everything Else) decides that nothing much will be lost if they fake the execution of Nanki-Poo. Nanki-Poo and Yum-Yum then marry and leave on their honeymoon. Soon after, the Mikado arrives to inspect the execution certificate. He is appalled to discover that, apparently, it was his own son that was put to death. As punishment, he decrees that the signatories to the certificate, Ko-Ko & Pooh-Bah, will be boiled in oil. In an attempt to save himself and Pooh-Bah, Ko-Ko woos and weds Katisha, who has considerable influence with the Mikado. She persuades the Mikado to pardon the pair. With Ko-Ko and Katisha married, Nanki-Poo, now safe from Katisha, makes his appearance with Yum-Yum. The story ends happily for all – and the figurines return to their quiet ‘life’ on the mantelpiece. **Production Team** Stage Director: Dean Sinclair Musical Director: Rod Mounjed Associate Director & Choreographer: Sarah Pearce Costumier: Sandra Tutt **Principal Cast** The Mikado of Japan: Tobias Page Nanki-Poo (His son, disguised): Jareth Norman Ko-Ko (Lord High Executioner of Titipu): Dean Sinclair Pooh-Bah (Lord High Everything Else): Joshua Knight Pish-Tush (A Noble Lord): Andrew Pennycuick Yum-Yum (A Ward of Ko-Ko): Anne-Louise Harris Pitti-Sing (Her sister): Johanna Knoechel / Lesley Braithwaite Peep-Bo (Her other sister): Oksana Popova Katisha (An Elderly Lady of the Mikado's court): Megan Chalmers *Understudies Laura Wachsmann (Yum-Yum) Bridget Wood (Peep-Bo) Anthony Henry Smith (Pooh-Bah) Nick Whiley (Pish-Tush)
