EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE PARISH #152: COTTAM Cottam – “Cottage Village” For the second time on TVI we come to place called Cottam. Last time we were in Nottinghamshire, and if you want to watch that video, itll be linked in today’s end screen. However this is the East Riding version, and its wildly different. In Nottinghamshire, we were focused mainly on a power station, but here its about two churches, two deserted villages and a former RAF base, which all occupy a neat little corner of the East Yorkshire Wolds. Cottam parish is a bit of a strange one if truth be told. There are two settlements within it, but its actually Cowlam that’s the larger. Cottam effectively, is the secondary hamlet. Mind you there’s not a great deal to choose between them. They both have religious buildings. Cowlam’s is on the Sykes Churches Trail and is located in a farmyard. Cottam’s is in the middle of a field, and in much worse state of repair. It’s the RAF base though that’s the most interesting thing up here. RAF Cottam has a unique piece of history because it was actually never used – or at least not for its intended purpose. Normally at this point I’d say lets get walking….but we cant! There’s no actual village to walk around! So instead, the vast majority of this one was done in the car, but given the horrid weather, maybe that was a blessing in disguise.
