Classic Aero-TV: Sandel’s ST3400H HeliTAWS - Terrain Awareness + Wire-Strike

This is a previously unreleased video from the ANN archives. While at the NBAA convention 2011, ANN’s Paul Plack visited with Jerry Henry, the director of sales for Sandel Avionics. The topic in this discussion was the Sandel ST3400 terrain avoidance device created specifically for helicopter operation. Henry started off by explaining that their extensive background in terrain warning systems for aircraft proved to be only a starting point for the special operational requirements presented by helicopters. He said they found they needed much greater processing capability and a different set of alerts. The big issue with a helicopter terrain warning alert system is that a helicopter is always operating near the terrain and alerts must discriminate for that condition. Henry explained that they needed to provide altitude alert protection at altitudes below 500 feet above the ground. He goes on to explain how they came up with a system that would allow a helicopter to operate in a low altitude environment and still receive terrain alerts without receiving false alerts. In this video you’ll see the ST3400H demonstrated as Henry describes the challenges of creating it.
