Eiji Kitamura (Japanese: 北村 英治) was born in Tokyo, Japan on April 8, 1929 and is a Japanese jazz clarinetist and tenor saxophonist. He devoted himself to clarinet playing while still an undergraduate at Keio University in Tokyo. In 1951, he made his professional debut at the age of 22, quickly becoming one of the top jazz musicians in Japan. He began making records - to date, he has released over 100 albums! Starting in 1959, Kitamura was named Best Jazz Clarinetist in Swing Journal's annual Reader's Poll each and every year since 1959. He and his quintet have performed regularly on "Morning Echoes", a Japanese television program which doubled his popularity in his homeland. In 1965, Eiji and the quintet recorded this 10" EP which includes "White Christmas", "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer", "Jingle Bells" and this song. He was a mainstay at the Monterey Jazz Festival for the 20 years in a row - American audiences took notice of him at the 20th Anniversary Jam Session of the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1977. Eiji has been described by Clarinet Magazine as "Japan's answer to Benny Goodman... a gentleman of personal charm and musical taste. All the ladies wanted to cuddle him, and all the clarinetists wanted break his fingers."
