For years I've wanted to visit New Slains Castle in Cruden Bay, Aberdeenshire. At last, I made it happen! We loved our stay at the Kilmarnock Arms Hotel in Cruden Bay for two nights where the Irish author Bram Stoker first visited in 1894. Bram and his family returned to the Cruden Bay area for next 17 years and eventually bought a second home in Whinnyfold, a small coastal village near Cruden Bay. It is thought that Bram Stoker visited Slains Castle when it was a lived in home, and he was inspired by the Octagonal Hall which is referred to as "an octagonal room" in his famous book 'Dracula'. Who wouldn't be inspired, I was already impressed by the ruins of the castle that are left over.😍 If you search online for photos of Slains Castle in its heyday you'll find a beautiful castle-like house perched on the high rocky cliffs with views out to the North Sea. Slains Castle was also the filming location for Castle of Mey in the TV series The Crown (Season 1). I love the idea that Slains Castle was partly the inspiration for 'Dracula'. It's so easy to get spooked being there after sunset or on a dull rainy day, and I felt my mood change with the weather and darkness. On a bright sunny day though, the castle ruins light up beautifully, and it doesn't feel spooky at all. The changing light shines through the open roof onto the walls and the trodden paths inside the ruins, a spectacular contrast of colours from sunrise to sunset. The different moods of Slains Castle are what inspired me the most, and I've hopefully been able to capture this in my video. As always, I'll be writing up a more detailed blog story over the next few months with photos as well. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did 💖 🧛🏰 Chapters: 00:00 Almost Sunrise 00:56 Daytime 02:14 Octagonal Hall 02:40 Almost Sunset 03:50 Twilight Music: Calcifer | Jon Bjork Akihiko Knows | David Celeste Divinity | Christoffer Moe Ditlevsen A Cradle Song | Mary Riddle Courtesy of https://www.epidemicsound.com #SlainsCastle #Aberdeenshire #Scotland
