This ancient and beautiful form is normally done in a set of circles, it's poetry in motion. I read about it years before I finally discovered it, and it didn't disappoint! Here's a version for staying in place without the circling, so you can become familiar with it. I do recommend piecing together the full version, if you can - there's a playlist on my channel teaching it. KNOCKING ON THE GATE OF LIFE Warming up with this enlivening twist. Let the arms relax and swing out with the turn of the waist, and allow loose fists to knock on the lower back and belly, then on the lung points at the front of the shoulders. SHAKING Gently shake and ease out tensions from the joints and muscles through the whole body. SWINGING ARMS An excellent medical qigong exercise. Again staying very relaxed, exhale as the arms go back and inhale as they come forwards. The knees do a double pump, raising and falling as the hands rise and fall. The pumping of the knee generates the movement through the arms, so that the whole body is connected. THE TURTLE In winter we work on strengthening our foundations. This low squat is a wonderful leg strengthener - hold for as long as is comfortable. The elbows or hands can rest on the knees if bending too far down is impractical. WU JI QIGONG: We repeat the full form twice, as described below. OPENING This opening routine creates the small circulation of chi in the body. Inhale as the hands rise, and exhale as they fall. Then bring the hands to form a chi ball in front of the belly, and open them out diagonally, first to one side and then the other. Bring them together again to form a chi ball at the chest. Exhale and drop the chi ball down to the earth. Inhale and bring it back up and through the back of the body, over the top of the head and down the front of the body to the earth again. This is the small circulation of chi. THE SUN, THE MOON, THE STARS Inhale, bringing chi up from the earth to the heart. Then exhale as the hands move to the side, to collect energy from the sun, and inhale as you bring it back to the heart. Repeat on the other side, imagining you are connecting to the moon's qi. Then once again to the opposite side, reaching to the stars. THE EARTH Circling the hands, imagine you are drawing energy up from the earth and returning it again, ten times. THE HEAVENS Here we gather energy from the sky and bring it down into the centre of the forehead, just above and between your eyes. Again we do this ten times. THE SELF Circle your hands nine times over the lower belly. The place them on the belly. Imagine a stream of light coming from your own particular star in the heavens to fill up your energy field, so that you shine with your own light. BRINGING DOWN THE HEAVENS A grounding move that ends any qigong session well. Inhale as the hands rise and exhale to release any tension as they fall. COMPLETION One hand over the other on the belly as you allow the chi we've generated to settle. I find this form really brings me into the present moment, feeling very alive. I hope it benefits you too! Thanks for practising with me. If you enjoyed it, great! Please do like, share and subscribe. Thank you :) ABOUT AMANDA I've been meditating and practising tai chi and qigong for 25 years now. I love to share these techniques. They are truly awesome.
