(21 Nov 1994) Eng/Nat: The increased tension in the Gaza Strip has prompted the Israeli Prime minister, Yitzhak Rabin, to send more troops to protect the Jewish settlers who live there. APTV has been to one settlement, Netzarim, to see how they're reacting to the latest hostilities. The settlement's extreme right-wing Israeli inhabitants, live in prison-like conditions. They require an armed escort to come and go, but believe it is their God-given right as Jews, to live wherever they want within the Holy Land. SOUNDBITE; "It is sad that soldiers are getting killed but we won't leave Netzarim, the problem would only be transferred to Tel-Aviv" SUPER CAPTION: none Recent tensions in the Gaza Strip worry Netzarim's 180 people as the Palestinian residents of Gaza are literally just a stone's throw from their fences. Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin has already responded to this threat by deploying more soldiers in addition to the 1500 troops already on protection duty. Morale within the army unit based just outside of the settlement is already low, however. In the past two weeks, the unit has lost four of its young soldiers in attacks by the militant Hamas group and many soldiers have begun to question their reasons for being there. There are increasing reports of soldiers refusing to serve as protectors in this dangerous area. The Netzarim settlement, has become a symbol for the complicated relationship between Israel and the Palestinians. No one knows what the future holds for these outposts but it remains to be seen which burden will be heavier - the security measures required by the Israelis, or pressure from the Palestinians, demanding the return of their land.
