The Department of Genetics presents the Gary D. Stormo Symposium on Computational Biology! This event celebrates Dr. Gary D. Stormo and his achievements as a pioneer in computational biology, as well as his legacy as an inspiring mentor and educator. His colleagues, collaborators, and former trainees will speak on Dr. Stormo’s accomplishments in computational biology, current developments in the field, and on the history of the Computational Biology Ph.D. program at Washington University in St. Louis. About Dr. Zhiping Weng: Dr. Weng holds the Li Weibo Chair in Biomedical Research at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School, where she is the inaugural Chair of the Department of Genomics and Computational Biology. She received her Ph.D. at Boston University, working in the lab of Charles DeLisi, after which she joined the faculty of Boston University in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. In 2008 Dr. Weng moved to the UMass Chan Medical School, where she established a new Program in Bioinformatics and Integrative Biology. She was elected a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering in 2013 and of the ICSB in 2020. She also co-founded the biomedical startup Rgenta. Her lab focuses on computational methods to understand gene regulation, protein binding, and small silencing RNAs. As part of the ENCODE and psychENCODE consortia, her lab has developed important computational tools for integrating multi-omic data to understand the molecular mechanisms of gene regulation.
