Super Touring Car Revival 2025 Nürburgring: Audi A4, Opel Vectra, BMW E36, Ford Mondeo, Peugeot 405!

The Oltimer Grand Prix at the Nürburgring is generally a great opportunity to see some legendary touring cars of the past back in action. Given the ever-increasing presence of cars of the Super Touring class, for 2025 the guys of Hombre-Motorsport.de decided to try to gather a significant number of these machines and form a single grid where they could race alone during the weekend, creating a real first revival of the category. In the end, a total of 16 Super Touring cars were at the event, some of which in a purely static display and others which I was unable to record properly due to technical problems they had over the weekend. But considering the high maintenance costs of those cars it was truly remarkable to see about ten of them constantly in action on track for the 4-days event. A second edition is already planned for next year, again during the Oldtimer GP weekend in August! Super Touring, or Class 2, category was defined by the FIA for national touring car racing in 1993 and it was based on the "2 litre Touring Car Formula" created for the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) in 1990. Super Touring replaced Group A as the norm in nearly every touring car championship across the world, but escalating development engine and aerodynamic costs, and the withdrawal of works teams caused the category to collapse in the late 1990s. They were required to be a minimum of 4.20 metres in length, with four doors, effectively requiring a small family saloon car as a minimum. No more than 2 litres engine capacity, maximum of six cylinders were permitted, and the engine was required to be naturally aspirated. Super Touring formula was used in most national championships with different names: Super Tourenwagen Cup (shorten STW) in Germany, Campionato Italiano Superturismo in Italy, Championnat de France de Supertourisme, Australian Super Touring Championship and so on. It's no wonder it was the true Golden Era of touring car racing!
