While the Bridegroom is with Us - Matthew 9: 14-15 Friday after Ash Wednesday 0:00 Begin 0:28 Reflection 3:07 Hymn A reflection on the Gospel of St Matthew 9: 14-15 In today’s Gospel, the disciples of John approach Jesus with an honest question: Why do we fast, but your disciples do not? It is not a hostile challenge but a sincere attempt to understand faithfulness. Jesus’ reply does not dismiss fasting, prayer, or discipline; instead, He reframes them around relationship. Jesus speaks of Himself as the bridegroom. While the bridegroom is present, fasting would be out of place — joy, celebration, and attentiveness take priority. Faith is not first a set of practices, but a living encounter. The danger Jesus gently exposes is this: when religious observance becomes detached from relationship, it can lose its meaning. Yet Jesus does not abolish fasting. He says, “The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away; then they will fast.” Discipline has its time. Practices matter — but they must arise from love, longing, and desire for God, not obligation alone. For us, this Gospel asks a searching question: Why do we do what we do in faith? Do we pray, fast, or serve because it is expected — or because we want to remain close to Christ? When faith becomes routine, even good practices can grow hollow. When rooted in love, the same practices become life-giving. Lent is precisely that season Jesus describes — a time when the Bridegroom feels distant, not absent, but calling us deeper. Our fasting, restraint, and reflection are not punishments or performances. They are expressions of longing: Come closer. Stay with us. This passage reminds us that Christian life holds both joy and discipline. There is a time to feast and a time to fast; a time to celebrate and a time to wait. What matters most is recognising who stands among us, and allowing our practices to flow from that living presence. Let us pray. Lord Jesus, You are the Bridegroom who walks among Your people. Free us from faith that becomes habit without heart, and draw us into practices shaped by love. When You seem near, teach us to rejoice with gratitude. When You feel distant, teach us to fast with hope. May our prayer, our restraint, and our service be signs of longing, not obligation. Shape our lives around Your presence, that all we do may lead us closer to You. Amen. Hymn: While the Bridegroom Walks Among Us Verse 1 We ask You why our striving stays, Why prayers feel worn and slow; You speak of joy that walks with us, A love we come to know. Chorus While the Bridegroom walks among us, Hearts awake and voices raise; Love stands present in our living, Not in empty forms of praise. Verse 2 No fast can serve a fearful heart, No rule replace Your face; You call us first to dwell with You, And rest within Your grace. Chorus While the Bridegroom walks among us, Hearts awake and voices raise; Love stands present in our living, Not in empty forms of praise. Verse 3 Yet there will come a quieter time, When longing shapes our prayer; We fast not out of guilt or fear, But hope that You are near. Chorus While the Bridegroom walks among us, Hearts awake and voices raise; Love stands present in our living, Not in empty forms of praise. Verse 4 So teach us when to feast with joy, And when to wait in trust; To let our faith be born of love, Not duty turned to dust. Final Chorus While the Bridegroom walks among us, Shape our hearts in truth and light; Till our fasting, prayer, and longing Lead us deeper into life.
