In 2016, to celebrate 50 years of 'The Vintage Train', Steamrail operated two steam trains to Geelong which included rare parallel running between Southern Cross and Sunshine, and Little River and Geelong. This video covers the 'Up' journey from Geelong back to Southern Cross. The video begins at North Shore with R761 and D3 639 running parallel through the station. Next we see the D3 heading over the Regional Rail Link Flyover at Manor Junction. After moving to Footscray station in preparation for the final leg of the parallel run, we see Up and Down Metro passes at the station before D3 639 heads past on the Regional Rail Link. Unfortunately the R class suffered mechanical issues and was delayed for several hours causing the final leg of the parallel run to be cancelled. The final shot shows an Aurizon freight train to Brisbane exiting Bunbury Street Tunnel.
