Energy systems are at the heart of climate change, technology, and the future of how we live, but they’re far more complex than most people realise. In this video, we explore three different ways of understanding energy systems, from the physical machinery that powers our world to the people, institutions, and feedback loops that shape how energy systems actually change over time. We start with the basics: supply, demand, and infrastructure. The same logic that applied to our earliest fire-using ancestors still governs modern grids, pipelines, fuels, and electricity networks. From there, we step beyond the engineering diagrams to include the human side of energy: consumers, investors, utilities, policymakers, and everyone who influences how energy is produced, delivered, and used. Finally, we dive into systems thinking and feedback loops. Reinforcing and balancing processes can explain phenomena like the rapid rise of solar in Pakistan, and why energy transitions can be both slow and suddenly explosive. By the end, you’ll see why energy systems behave more like living ecosystems than simple machines, and why transforming them requires a whole-system perspective. 00:00 Energy Systems 00:22 Technical Energy Systems 03:56 Sankey Diagrams 04:45 Social Energy Systems 07:11 Non-linear Energy Systems 09:56 Summing Up I’m Dr Chris Jardine, and I’ve been teaching an MSc course on energy and climate change at Oxford University for the past 25 years. Now I’m on a mission to bring this topic to a wider audience as a series of bite-sized Youtube videos.
