Music for the Soul #30 – “Someone Cares” (Words: John Gowans Music: John Larsson) Music is the language of the soul, it has a unique and special ability to connect directly to the soul to bring joy, soothe sorrows, relieve stress and stir the emotions. Along with Albert Orsborn, John Gowans was a poet General. He has left a legacy of lyrics which communicate the unmerited, unconditional and unending love of God….. “God loves everyone and God loves ME!” Simple to say, perhaps it sounds naïve, but we as Jesus followers know that even when life gets rough the boundless love of God is strong enough to bring us through terrible and tragic times which without Him would be unbearable. Gowans was keenly aware that millions of people live their lives thinking that God, if there even is a God, cannot or will not or must not love them. So he wrote love songs to communicate this love that is ‘as high as the sky and as deep as the sea’. This song, “Someone Cares”, is arguably one of his most popular songs in Salvation Army circles because most of us at one time or another can answer ‘yes’ to it’s opening questions and need reminding that someone cares…..namely God. Do you sometimes feel that no one truly knows you, And that no one understands or really cares? Through his people, God himself is close beside you, And through them he plans to answer all your prayers. Someone cares, someone cares, Someone knows your deepest need, your burden shares; Someone cares, someone cares, God himself will hear the whisper of your prayers. Ours is not a distant God, remote, unfeeling, Who is careless of our loneliness and pain, Through the ministry of men he gives his healing, In their dedicated hands brings hope again.
