Located on the third and fifth floors of the new Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, a butterfly canopy on Gayley Avenue marks the separate entrance to the Children's Hospital. A large terrace on the fifth floor allows children direct access to the outdoors so that they can play in the sunshine. Patient rooms benefit from an abundance of natural light and a sense of plentiful space with large windows that overlook gardens, green spaces and gathering places. SPECIAL FEATURES: The lobby welcomes patients and visitors with a dynamic, multi-media, 60-foot-long, 12-foot-high "Welcome Wall" -- an evolving stream of photos, children's art and video content that projects stories about the people and programs at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA, along with messages of hope, healing and recovery. Providing a special place for creative expression, a pillar alongside the "Welcome Wall" features a view port into which kids can peek and then find their own image projected on the screens, becoming a part of the wall themselves. The space and media elements engage children and families while creating a special identity for the hospital within Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. Creating a home-like atmosphere for children, the third and fifth floors address the social and emotional needs of children and families in the hospital with design features such as a large map of the world and impressive aquarium. Specialists provide individualized therapeutic intervention, play and educational programs. Architects incorporated the beauty of the outdoors and sunlight into the space to enhance the healing process. Multiple age-appropriate playrooms and a family resource room extend to a large outdoor play terrace with ocean views and eight-foot plexi glass walls. The outdoor area allows children to safely play in the open air and enjoy the healing effects of natural light. A multi-media room on the third floor gives teens a special place to play video games or watch movies. At Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA, form truly follows function. Each nursing unit has its own minor procedure room so young patients can undergo certain treatments away from their sleeping area to avoid associating pain or distress with their own room. Spacious private patient rooms feature large windows with panoramic views and a window seat with a daybed so family members can comfortably spend time in the room. To help ease the anxiety of sick and frightened children, the Emergency Department features pediatricfriendly exam rooms with colorful murals and decorated ceiling tiles.
