After the deities of the past few episodes, which due to their own difficult dispositions have been challenging one way or another, we arrive at last, at Hope. The Roman goddess of hope is Spes and to really think about who she is and what she represents, we need to take a look at our own ideas about hope and where they come from. We will contrast Spes with Greek Elpis and revisit Pandora and her infamous 'box'. We will then look at her role in imperial Rome as well as her legacy in Christianity. Hope is... well, who and what is hope? *** This is the twenty-second in an ancient history series that explores Roman religion behind the veil of Greek mythology. Each episode focuses on a different indigenous Roman god. The episodes follow on from one another and are building a bigger picture for those who are along for the ride but they are designed also to stand alone, so feel free to dip in and out. Our task is to recover Rome's lesser-known deities from obscurity and, ultimately, to better understand the religion that fuelled an empire. Welcome to the Shadows of Olympus!
