This episode is our third frolic in the wild woods; this time we dance with the fauns. But what are fauns? What role did fauns play in Roman religion and what place did they hold in the hearts and minds of the inhabitants of the Roman world? We will find out by entering the world of Faunus, who is ancient Rome's faun god, a wild god of nature and guardian of the flocks. He is simultaneously a very attractive character but also an edgy one and we will explore both sides of his personality and antics. We will see him at work with his father, Picus, the woodpecker divinity we met in the previous episode and we will also encounter Pan , the satyrs, and, of course, the nymphs. Faunus gives us an opportunity to think about theriomorphism and the hybrid creatures of Graeco-Roman mythology. Focusing on fauns and Faunus, we will consider what their hybrid nature tells us not only about these divine creatures but also about ourselves. *** This is the twenty-eighth in an ancient history series that explores Roman religion behind the veil of Greek mythology. Each episode focuses on a different indigenous Roman god. The episodes follow on from one another and are building a bigger picture for those who are along for the ride but they are designed also to stand alone, so feel free to dip in and out. Our task is to recover Rome's lesser-known deities from obscurity and, ultimately, to better understand the religion that fuelled an empire. Welcome to the Shadows of Olympus!
