So who remembers Knight School? It was a sitcom set in a medieval educational establishment co-run by Trigger from Only Fools and Horses that was billed at the time as a sort of Grange-Hill-meets-Blackadder type of show, but I'd draw much stronger comparisons to Maid Marian and Her Merry Men. The penchant for funny anachronisms is similar, and the overall tone is practically identical. THIS IS A GOOD THING. It's also a thing that makes perfect sense, as it was co-created by Mark Billingham, who played one of Tony Robinson's henchmen in that show and apparently helped out with some of its scripts. I believe this particular episode, which is called Opening Knight, was broadcast in October 1997 and was the first series closer. It sees St Cuthbert's school putting on their end-of-term play directed by celebrity guest Sir Cameron Lloyd-Webfoote, while there's a subplot which sees Deputy Head Trigger attempting to blow up his nemesis and our hero, the commoner and semi-lovable wisecracking rogue Wally Scrope. I've got no memory of Knight School the first time round, but I have to say that it ticks quite a few boxes as far as good CITV sitcoms go. Most of the gags hit the mark, the characters and situations have been thought through well, and everything's delivered in as well and believable a way as this sort of thing can be. Ironically enough, the one element that dates the show more than anything else is the aforementioned anachronisms, with references to Robson and Jerome and Riverdancing more likely to fly over the heads of modern viewers than the already-historical jokes. The "Mobile Herald" still works, though, and I got a good laugh out of "Moses and His Tremendously-Coloured Trousers" and "Judas Iscariot - Super Grass". If not for Blackadder, I might swear Upstart Crow was a a low-rent knock-off of this, if that's not damning it with faint praise. All in all, thumbs up from me. Keep an eye out at the beginning for some ads and CITV continuity. Speaking of anachronisms (as I believe we were), it that Fairy Liquid one really from 1997, or was that a retro throwback even then? I suspect the latter. I also suspect I recognise the young actress... Was she in anything else? Grateful thanks to Lee for providing this recording.
