KNOX ACADEMY OF PERFORMING ARTS – 2024 KNOX IN CONCERT FESTIVAL – Knox Symphonic Wind Ensemble (SWE) performing Julie Giroux’s Symphony No. 4: Bookmarks from Japan conducted by Mr James Brice OAM March 7, 2024, at the Knox Grammar School, Wenkart Theatre, Junior Academy & Performing Arts Centre, Wahroonga NSW. The Knox Symphonic Wind Ensemble (SWE) is a premiere large ensemble of the Knox Grammar School, Sydney, Australia. Comprised of 75 musicians, SWE represents the talents, musicianship and dedication of Knox Grammar School’s extensive Knox Academy of Performing Arts (KAPA), Instrumental Music Program. The Knox Symphonic Wind Ensemble is made up of experienced wind, brass and percussion instrumentalists from Years 7-12. The ensemble is conducted by Mr James Brice OAM, Head of the Knox Academy of Performing Arts, Knox Grammar School. The composer’s inspiration for this symphony was a gift of six bookmarks featuring famous works by Japanese artists. Ms Giroux says: "My imagination was whirling with each scene painted on each bookmark. I knew right then and there that those little bookmarks would be the subject of my next symphony." 0:00:00 - Movement 1: Mount Fuji - “Fuji-san” Based on the bookmark "Fine Wind, Clear Morning" by Hokusai Katsushika which is a woodblock sketch from Hokusai's collection The 35 Views of Mt. Fuji. 00:02:52 - Movement 2: Nihonbashi - "Market Bridge" Based on the bookmark Nihonbashi by Hiroshige Ando, which is from the print series The 53 Stations of the Tokaido Highway 00:05:57 - Movement 3: The Great Wave Off Kanagawa - “The Life of One Wave” Based on the bookmark "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" by Hokusai Katsushika. 00:10:08 - Movement 4: Kinryuzan Temple in Asakusa - "Thunder Gate" The name of the print on the bookmark says “Kaminari-mon Gate of Asakusa Kannon Temple” but the true name of the print is “Kinryuzan Temple in Asakusa” by the artist Hiroshige Ando. 00:13:20 - Movement 5: “Evening Snow at Kambara - Light is the Touch" Based on the bookmark "Evening Snow at Kambara" by Hiroshige Ando which is from the series The 53 Stations of the Tokaido Highway. 00:16:52 - Movement 6: Hakone: "Drifting" Based on the bookmark entitled "Hakone Pass" which is based on the actual print by Hiroshige Ando called "Hakone" which is the eleventh print in the series The 53 Stations of the Tokaido Highway.
