(15 May 1999) Albanian/Nat U-N officials say they are expecting tens of thousands of ethnic Albanians to flood into Macedonia from Kosovo. Three hundred refugees have crossed the border today, arriving with reports of Serb tanks rumbling through their villages and many soldiers in the area. There is, they say, no food left in the country - and supplies are running low in the border camps too. Refugees in the Cegrane camp continue to wait for the war to end, and their chance to go home. German troops built the camp which has become home to thirty thousand Kosovan refugees who have fled the fighting - including hundreds of children. The germans are now leaving, making way for aid groups. They distributed sweets amongst the children as a parting gift. But life here is replete with duress. The camp itself is running low on food and medicine. New refugees coming across the border bring tales of greater horror, however. Groups crossing on Saturday, the largest number for 10 days, shouted to reporters that there is a heavy military presence in Urosevac, where they had boarded a train earlier that day - some after wandering the open in Kosovo for five weeks. Others already in the camp spoke of their experiences. SOUNDBITE: (Albanian) "We left our house and after 10 minutes of walking , they burnt it completely. We went in the nearest mountains and stayed 10 days. After 3 days, the police came in and we had to escape. Other people went back to the village to get some food but there was no food: houses were burnt. All we found was bread and salt and that is what the children were eating." SUPER CAPTION: Ljuljeta Sherifi, female refugee from Lipljane The flow of refugees into Macedonia, where the influx has aroused fears in the Slav majority of upsetting their majority over Macedonian Albanians, had slowed to a trickle after Macedonia closed the border briefly this month. In Kosovo, word got round that no one could cross, the refugees said. They boarded a train early Saturday at Urosevac, 30 kms (20 miles) from the border, not knowing if they would be allowed across. But now, with the borders open again, the flow is increasing. Many of the refugees have plans. SOUNDBITE: (Albanian) "I want to go to Germany. I hope I will be accepted in their army. They are so kind to us." SUPER CAPTION: Male refugee Macedonia has taken nearly one-third of the some 780,000 ethnic Albanian refugees who have fled or been expelled by Serb forces from the province of Yugoslavia's Serb republic.
