A new glaucoma treatment with contact lenses is in the pipeline! What could this mean if approved? It could give doctors and patients a new set of tools to hone the best possible treatment for each individual patient based on their needs and lifestyle. If approved, these glaucoma medication-imbibed contact lenses would reduce the need for eye drops, could reduce the prevalence of side effects due to their lack of preservatives, and may even help to combat dry eye (as 40% of those involved in the study had improved dry eye symptoms)! There is certainly more to be studied, and the availability of a treatment like this, if approved, would still be years away. BUT!! We have to start somewhere to achieve change, and I am optimistic that whether this particular treatment is approved or not, it has opened the doors for other glaucoma treatment options in the future.
