The commemoration is centered on the Gospel of Luke (18:10–14), which tells the parable of two men praying in the Temple: a Pharisee, who is outwardly pious but consumed by pride, and a Publican (tax collector), who is a social outcast but possesses deep, humble repentance. By placing this Sunday at the very beginning of the pre-Lenten journey, the Church establishes humility as the essential foundation for all spiritual discipline. It serves as a spiritual "wake-up call," reminding the faithful that fasting and prayer are meaningless if they are performed with the self-righteousness of the Pharisee rather than the "broken and humbled heart" of the Publican.
