Hello Community, I’m Henry Friar, ISA certified Arborist, with Arborist USA. Trees need oxygen just as much as they need water and nutrients. In this video, we explain a common landscaping mistake we see in Granbury, Texas and across North Texas — covering tree roots or the base of the trunk with soil or sod. Many homeowners don’t realize that trees breathe through specialized structures in the bark called lenticels. These porous openings allow oxygen to move into the tree’s living tissues so normal respiration can occur. When soil grade is raised, sod is installed, or mulch is piled too close to the trunk, these lenticels become suffocated. This lack of oxygen creates a condition known as hypoxia, where roots can no longer respire properly. Hypoxic root systems lose function, decline, and become highly susceptible to pathological diseases such as root rot and other opportunistic infections. Over time, this leads to canopy thinning, dieback, and in severe cases, tree failure. In this video, we cover: • What lenticels are and how trees exchange oxygen • Why protruding root systems should never be buried • How soil compaction and excess fill reduce gas exchange • The science behind hypoxia and root decline • Proper mulching practices based on ISA and ANSI A300 standards • Why maintaining a mulch-free space around the trunk is critical for tree health Correct mulching means keeping soil and mulch at least one foot away from the trunk, maintaining visible root flare, and allowing oxygen to reach the root collar. These simple practices can significantly extend the life of mature trees. This video is educational and intended to help homeowners protect their trees before decline becomes irreversible. If you’re unsure whether your trees are being impacted by soil buildup, grade changes, or improper mulching, a professional evaluation can make all the difference.
