Percy Aldridge Grainger 1882 –1961 An Australian-born composer, arranger and pianist. In the course of a long and innovative career he played a prominent role in the revival of interest in British folk music in the early years of the 20th century. He also made many adaptations of other composers' works. Although much of his work was experimental and unusual, the piece with which he is most generally associated is his piano arrangement of the folk-dance tune "Country Gardens". It was Grainger's love of folk music that took him to Lincolnshire with an Edison Phonograph (an early type of wax cylinder recording apparatus). Folk Singer Joseph Taylor and family had moved to a quaint little little village called 'Saxby All Saints'. It was here at a music festival in 1905 that he became well known by his singing local folk songs and so to his connection with Percy Grainger. This recording by Julian Lloyd Webber is based on Joseph Taylor's rendition of a local folk song celebrating the 'Brigg Fair' and the chances of possible courtship to be found there .... but there is a bitter sting in the tail with this version of the song's lyrics . It was on the fifth of August-er' the weather fine and fair, Unto Brigg Fair I did repair, for love I was inclined. I rose up with the lark in the morning, with my heart so full of glee, Of thinking there to meet my dear, long time I'd wished to see. I took hold of her lily-white hand, O and merrily was her heart: "And now we're met together, I hope we ne'er shall part". For it's meeting is a pleasure, and parting is a grief, But an unconstant lover is worse than any thief. The green leaves they shall wither and the branches they shall die If ever I prove false to her, to the girl that loves me. The video pays tribute to Joseph Taylor who was a popular folksinger and true Son of the Soil, being by profession a Woodsman and Agricultural Worker. The video portrays the Woodsman as a smock wearing, pipe smoking elderly Son of the Soil, who looks into the distance contemplatively. Also to Percy Grainger to whom we owe so much musically, for collecting such songs from a bygone age, arranging and preserving them and then influencing other composers and musicians. In particular Frederick Delius who was a close friend of Grainger. It was from their collaboration that Delius' famous 'English Rhapsody' Brigg Fair was created. The images also include Delius' amanuenses Eric Fenby pictured at the piano with Julian Lloyd Webber.. There are also vintage picture card views of the the town of Brigg and atmospheric paintings by Atkinson Grimshaw. Album: The Art of Julian Lloyd Webber.
