The Mercedes 190E 2.3-16 was never meant for DTM. It was supposed to compete in the World Rally Championship – but then came the Audi Quattro. So the rally car became a touring car, the project became a legend, and 185 hp in the street car became 370 hp on the racetrack. In 1983, it drove 50,000 km in 201 hours at an average of 248 km/h in Nardo. In 1984, it beat Niki Lauda, Alain Prost, and Carlos Reutemann in the "Race of Champions." In 1992, it won 16 out of 24 DTM races.
