🔍 Why Fear-Based Abstinence Approaches Don't Work 👉🏽 Most of us as Muslims know that sex before marriage is haraam (i.e. religiously impermissible). Yet when we're asked to explain why - from Islamic Spirituality and Psychology perspectives - many of us aren't able to articulate reasons beyond a fear-based, sin, and punishment framework. 💻 Research into outcomes of psychologically fear-based abstinence approaches tells us that it's not working (i.e. it doesn't help delay or prevent sexual activity), both within mainstream and Muslim spaces. Furthermore, Islamic Psychology demonstrates that fear-based approaches actually activates fear within our lower-self (nafs al-ammarah), meaning that we act out of fear, which takes us away from empowerment and God-consciousness, and from actively choosing to align our actions with the sacred ways in which God created us (fitrat Allah). 🙌🏽 My first course, dropping this summer, will be diving into understanding the Quranic Psychology of the Self, and foundations for sexual health as Muslims, including how we understand sexual intimacy.
