Effective Communication Skills to Optimize the Patient-Provider Relationship

The challenges of understanding and caring patients who don't fit the biomedical model of illness will be discussed and the value of a more integrated biopsychosocial model illustrated. The lecture will include a demonstraton of communication methods to improve the physician patient relationship. Douglas Drossman is is Adjunct Professor of Medicine and Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, President of the Center for Education and Practice of Biopsychosocial Care and former co-director of the UNC Center for Functional GI and Motility Disorders. He serves on the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Gulf War and Health: Treatment of Chronic Multisymptom Illness.
