The route begins near Chion-in Temple (the head temple of the Jōdo Pure Land Sect) and ascends the mountain path, which forms a section of the Higashiyama Trail. This path is a trekking route leading through a dense forest. Along the way, breaks in the trees allow for glimpses of the Kyoto cityscape. The route's destination, Shōgunzuka (General's Mound), is an ancient mound traditionally believed to have been interred by Emperor Kanmu to protect the capital upon the founding of Heian-kyō. Currently, the Shōgunzuka Seiryū-den is established there.
