There’s a common perception that yoga isn’t a workout, so that you shouldn’t get sore from it. But there are so many different ways to do yoga, and most of those ways involve movement and exercise. And exercise causes soreness. Overall, soreness is a good thing. It means you did enough of a workout that your muscle fibers have been broken down, and as a result, your body will work to rebuild them. That’s how you get stronger. When you have excessive soreness that lasts for more than a couple of days, then we’re getting into the overtraining category, and we typically want to avoid that. More on that later. Sore from strength & mobility: This is muscle soreness from your muscles being fatigued. They might feel tender to the touch. You might groan a bit when you’re going through your day to day movements. Most people who do a yoga workout will feel sore afterwards. That’s because you worked your muscles. Yoga isn’t always as stressful on your body as a weight lifting workout, but that doesn’t mean that you aren’t breaking down muscle fibers. Anytime you feel shaking in your muscles or you’re really struggling to make it through another rep, a few more seconds of a posture, etc, then you’re breaking down muscle fibers. This causes you to get sore. You’ll even feel sore from stretching & flexibility work. This is a different kind of soreness. Your muscles feel worked, but they don’t feel tender or painful. Movement should feel easy, but you’ll definitely notice more awareness in your muscles than usual. Overly sore: If you’re sore for over 2 days, you probably pushed yourself a bit too hard, and you’ll want to back off in the future. If you feel joint pain, that means your muscles are tight and pulling on your joints, or you worked beyond your muscles’ capabilities and your joints had to do a bit more work than they should have. If you’re just starting out and establishing a habit of consistent yoga, you’ll likely be moderately sore for the first few weeks. This is normal. Your body is adjusting. It’s important that you continue to be consistent during this time of soreness, but also to be on the lookout for overtraining symptoms like poor sleep, “heavy” muscles, excessive soreness or muscle paint, joint pain, or above average fatigue. Over time, as you become more consistent with your workouts, your body will adjust and you won’t feel as sore, and the soreness will go away more quickly. Getting rid of soreness Whatever the case, you should be sure to do some exercise when you’re sore. Movement helps to bring circulation to your body’s muscles, and this flushes out dead cells and promotes recovery. Sitting on the couch and bragging about how sore you are does not. You can do a restorative yoga workout, go for a nice walk, a relaxing hike - whatever is appropriate for your fitness level. A hike might be extremely strenuous for one person, but a great recovery activity for somebody else. - - 👉 WELCOME to your yoga for men channel by Man Flow Yoga.
