The Thol Bird Sanctuary is a man-made shallow water reservoir built by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaikwad, ruler of Vadodara in 1912. The waterland is predominated by the open water habitat which is surrounded by scrubland, fallow land and cropland. Due to its popularity among birds and waterfowl, the area was declared as a sanctuary in November 1988, under Sec 18. Of Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. A large number of migratory birds and waterfowl get attracted to this sanctuary due to the water reservoir and the agricultural fields surrounding the lake that provide food to them. There are more than 80 species of birds and waterfowl that visit Thol every year between November and February. Equipped with nothing but a modest Canon 60D with three lenses, a tripod and a sound recorder, I set out on what was going to be an experience of a lifetime. Assisted by friend left at 5am on a bike in order to reach Thol by 6:30am- just in time for sunrise. It was in the month of January and bike rides in 6 degree Celsius made us shiver! Thol was beautiful beyond words. We got to see sunrise and the moon setting down at the same time, accompanied with the faint murmur of birds who had just woken up. We recorded sounds and footage as much we could. We shot for two days, witnessing over 20 species of waterfowl and birds, managing to shot some, and gaping in awe at the rest. Thol’s atmosphere has the power to mesmerise and soothe anyone searching for an escape from the busy life of the city. Being there makes one truly experience what it is to be 'one with nature'; with the lush temperate forest- like landscape, a vast variety of bird species topped with a rich soundscape. The following film attempts to capture some of the prominent species of birds at Thol as well as the rich and diverse soundscape of the Sanctuary.
