Bush hosted a White House dinner for Australian Prime Minister John Howard on Tuesday. "A world without a dedicated involved America, would be a lesser world, a less safe world, a more precarious world," the Australian Prime Minister said at the banquet. The two leaders were joined by their wives, Janette Howard and Laura Bush, who wore a pale yellow, beaded long-sleeved gown designed by Peggy Jennings. Other guests included: David Eisenhower, director of the Institute for Public Service at the Annenberg School at the University of Pennsylvania and his wife, Julie Nixon Eisenhower; Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy; professional golfer Geoff Ogilvy; David O'Reilly, chairman of Chevron Corporation.; Samuel Palmisano, chairman of IBM; and CBS anchorman Bob Schieffer. Bush began his day with Howard at an elaborate welcoming ceremony on the South Lawn, where Bush recalled how the two had met at the White House on September 10, 2001 - the day before the terrorist attacks. They were set to end their evening in the East Room to hear music by Kenny Chesney, singer, songwriter, and Entertainer of the Year for both the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association. The high ceremony of Howard's visit belies Bush's domestic struggles, as US lawmakers from both political parties, keen to build momentum as November elections approach, increasingly question his policies. Howard, meanwhile, has maintained his political strength in the face of critics who have questioned his strong ties to the United States. In 2004, he soundly defeated an opposition party that promised to bring home Australia's troops in and around Iraq if it won.
